Bottom line
Buy a balance charger with a low-voltage cutoff. Charge in a LiPo bag on a non-flammable surface. Never charge unattended. Store batteries at 3.8V/cell when not in use for more than a week. If a battery puffs, swells, smells sweet, or gets hot — stop, walk it outside, leave it in a metal bin away from anything that burns.
This isn't paranoia. LiPo fires are fast and self-sustaining. The good news is they're entirely preventable with five quid of kit and a bit of discipline.
Why LiPos took over
Lithium polymer batteries deliver enormous current relative to their weight and volume. A 7.4V 1300mAh 25C LiPo weighs ~70g and dumps 32.5A on demand — enough to spin a hot AEG motor at 25+ rounds per second. NiMH batteries doing the same job weighed three times as much and gave up half the trigger response.
The cost: lithium chemistry doesn't tolerate abuse the way NiMH does. A NiMH battery you overcharged was binned. A LiPo you overcharge can vent in a flame the colour of welding arc and burn anything it touches.
The numbers on the label, decoded
A typical AEG battery: 7.4V 1300mAh 25C 2S Stick
- 7.4V — nominal voltage. Two cells of 3.7V each in series.
- 1300mAh — capacity. Higher = more shots per charge.
- 25C — discharge rate. Multiply capacity by C-rating to get max continuous current draw. 1300mAh × 25C = 32.5A.
- 2S — two cells in series. 3S means three cells (11.1V).
- Stick — the physical shape (vs. saddle, nunchuck, brick).
For AEGs: 7.4V (2S) or 11.1V (3S). 11.1V gives faster trigger response but stresses the gearbox and motor more — if you go 11.1V, fit a MOSFET / ETU to your AEG first.
For HPA solenoid engines: usually 7.4V 850mAh+. Less current draw than AEG motors.
C-rating to chase: 25C is the practical minimum. 30C–40C is the sweet spot. Anything advertised as "60C burst" — believe the continuous figure, not the burst.
Charging — the only part that matters for safety
A LiPo cell is happy between 3.0V (empty) and 4.2V (full). Take it below 3.0V and you damage it permanently. Push it above 4.2V — even by a few hundredths — and it can vent.
A balance charger monitors each cell individually through the small white JST-XH plug on the side of the battery (the "balance lead"). It charges each cell separately to hit 4.2V exactly, no overshoots.
A non-balance charger charges the pack as a single unit at 8.4V (for a 2S) — and if one cell is slightly weaker than the other, the strong cell goes to 4.3V while the weak one only hits 4.1V. That's the failure mode that starts fires.
Buy a balance charger. ISDT, SkyRC iMax B6, Hota — all under £40. Skip the £8 unbranded ones; they have no thermal cutoff.
Set the charge rate to 1C or lower. A 1300mAh battery charges at 1.3A. Faster charge rates work but stress cells and shorten life. There's no reason to fast-charge at home.
The LiPo bag
A fire-retardant LiPo bag costs £4–8. Buy one. Put the battery in it during charging. Put the bag on a non-flammable surface (tile, metal tray, concrete). Charge in a room where you'll be present until the charger beeps.
The bag won't stop a LiPo fire if one starts. It will contain one long enough that you can pick it up with tongs, get it outside, and avoid losing your house.
Never charge:
- On a bed, sofa, carpet, or fabric surface
- In a vehicle
- Unattended overnight
- A puffed, dented, or wet battery
- A pack hotter than ambient temperature
Storage voltage
LiPos lose health when stored full (4.2V/cell) or empty (3.0V/cell). The sweet spot for storage is 3.7–3.85V per cell, which corresponds to:
- 7.4V 2S: ~7.6V total
- 11.1V 3S: ~11.4V total
Most balance chargers have a storage mode that brings the pack to 3.8V/cell either by charging or discharging from where it currently sits. Use it after every skirmish day if the pack won't be used within a week.
For a season of regular play (every 2 weeks), you can leave packs at the voltage they came off the gun at. For storage of more than a month, run storage mode.
What to do at a skirmish
- Bring 2 batteries per gun minimum, ideally 3. AEG packs typically last 3,000–5,000 shots.
- Bring a car charger or USB-PD charger if you'll be at the site all day.
- Check pack temperature when you change batteries — warm is fine, hot is not.
- Never charge in your car with the engine off and windows up. Either run a fan or charge in the gun rack.
- Bring the LiPo bag even to the site.
What "puffing" looks like, and what to do
A healthy LiPo is flat and firm. A "puffed" or "swollen" LiPo has visibly bulged sides, sometimes pillow-shaped. This is internal gas from chemistry breakdown. Puffed = dispose of, do not use, do not charge.
If a battery puffs while you're using it:
- Stop firing immediately.
- Unplug from the gun.
- Move it to a non-flammable surface outside (concrete, asphalt, sand).
- Leave it for 24 hours to confirm it isn't continuing to react.
- Discharge to 0V (a 12V car bulb across the leads works) before binning at a battery recycling point.
If a battery vents (smoke, sparks, smell of sweet model glue):
- Do not pick it up with bare hands. Use tongs.
- Get it outside, away from anything that burns.
- Sand or metal bucket containment if you have one. Water doesn't put out lithium fires.
- Don't breathe the smoke — LiPo fumes are toxic.
What kills LiPos
In rough order:
- Over-discharge. Running the pack to 0V (gun stops working) damages cells. A MOSFET or ETU with low-voltage cutoff in your AEG prevents this — the gun stops firing before the battery hits unsafe voltage.
- Overcharge. Mainly from non-balance chargers or wrong settings.
- Physical damage. Punctures, hard drops, BBs hitting an exposed battery in your gun's stock.
- Heat. Storage in a car boot in summer. Fast-charging without rest.
- Storage at full or empty for months. Cells lose capacity permanently.
A LiPo that's looked after will give you 200+ charge cycles. One that's abused dies in 20.
Connectors — Deans, T-plug, XT60
Your gun probably ships with a Tamiya connector (large white plastic). These are awful — high resistance, poor current handling, terrible trigger response. Cut them off and replace with:
- Deans (T-plug) — most popular AEG upgrade, low profile, good current handling.
- XT60 — even better current handling, slightly larger.
Make sure your battery and your gun match. Buying a Deans battery and a Tamiya AEG without a converter is a £40 mistake.
What to actually buy
Starter kit, under £80:
- Balance charger: ISDT Q6 Lite or SkyRC iMax B6 (£25–35)
- 2× LiPo packs for your gun (£12–18 each — sized to fit your stock or handguard)
- LiPo bag: any fire-retardant pouch (£5)
- Battery checker: 1S–8S voltage tester (£5–10)
- MOSFET or ETU for your AEG (£20–50 — fit-and-forget low-voltage protection)
