Bottom line
The gearbox version number is not a quality rating. It is a shape classification — a code that tells you which platform the gearbox fits, what parts interchange, and how much aftermarket support you can draw on. V2 dominates the hobby because it lives inside the M4 family. V3 is arguably tougher. Everything else occupies a niche. If you are planning your first tech work, the version number is the first thing you need to identify before ordering a single part.
What a version number actually means
Tokyo Marui invented the modern AEG gearbox in 1991 and spent the following decade iterating. Each major external change — a different motor cage position, a different spring guide orientation, a different shell geometry to fit a new platform — got a new version number. The numbers are not a ranking from worst to best. V7 is not better than V2; it is a different shape for a different gun.
The version number defines:
- Shell geometry — the physical shape of the gearbox body, which determines what receiver it fits into
- Motor cage orientation and position — side-mounted vs grip-mounted, short vs long motor
- Spring guide type — flat-end vs hole-end, which affects spring and buffer tube compatibility
- Cylinder and tappet plate geometry — which nozzle length fits, which tappet timing suits the platform
What it does not define: gear ratios, piston type, motor quality. Those are variables within a version. A V2 shell from Specna Arms and a V2 shell from Tokyo Marui fit the same receiver but may share nothing else internally.
V2 — the M4 gearbox that ate the hobby
What runs it
The V2 is the default gearbox for the M4/AR-15 family, most MP5 variants, the G3 family, and the MP7 (in various forms). This makes it the gearbox inside probably 60–70% of all AEGs sold in the UK right now. When you walk onto a site and look at the team loadouts, you are mostly looking at V2s.
Why it dominates
Parts availability is self-reinforcing. Because everyone bought M4s, every parts maker targeted V2. Because V2 parts were everywhere, more people bought M4s. Today you can source V2 gears, cylinders, pistons, tappet plates, spring guides, sector chips, ETUs, and complete shell replacements from a dozen manufacturers at every price point. SHS, ZCI, Lonex, ASG Ultimate, Prometheus, Siegetek, Retro Arms — all primary V2 product lines. No other gearbox version comes close.
Disassembly requires removing the lower receiver from the upper first (the "pizza" method, or just dropping the lower), then opening the clamshell. It is not the fastest gearbox to work on, but the process is so well-documented — YouTube teardowns, Negative Airsoft guides, written walkthroughs — that a first-time tech has more tutorial support here than anywhere else.
V2 weak spots
Shell fragility at high power: the standard V2 shell is investment cast zinc alloy. It handles stock springs (M100, M110) without issue, but push past M120–M130 and repeated compression-side stress starts cracking the shell, particularly around the spring guide hole and the front cylinder port. Budget V2s crack faster. The fix is a reinforced shell — CNC aluminium or steel options exist from Retro Arms, SHS, and Jefftron — but it adds cost and weight.
Tappet timing and nozzle length: the V2 uses a two-piece tappet system and the nozzle length is platform-specific. MP5 nozzles are shorter than M4 nozzles. Get this wrong and you get BB feeding failures or double-feeds. The part cost is minimal (under £5 for most nozzles), but you need to identify the exact platform, not just "V2".
No integrated motor cage: the motor sits in the pistol grip, which is a separate piece. Grip-motor alignment matters — a poorly aligned motor grinds against the bevel gear pinion and kills both within a few magazines. Shimming the motor height correctly is a core V2 skill.
V3 — the AK gearbox and why it is actually the tougher unit
What runs it
The V3 is the gearbox for AK variants (AK47, AK74, AKM, AKMS), the G36 family, and the MP5K in some configurations. It also appears in the Sig 550 series and certain FAMAS builds.
How it differs from V2
The defining difference is the integrated motor cage. On a V3, the motor cage is part of the gearbox shell, not the pistol grip. This means motor alignment is fixed by the gearbox itself — no shimming the motor height with washers. Field result: V3s tend to need less motor-related maintenance and the motor-to-bevel mesh is more consistent from build to build.
The V3 shell is also generally thicker around the spring guide — this is a function of fitting inside an AK receiver, which has a different geometry to an AR lower, but the practical effect is that V3s tolerate higher spring weights with less shell stress than stock V2s. An M120 in a good V3 is less drama than an M120 in a budget V2.
The trade-off: the V3's parts ecosystem is smaller. Not small — there are plenty of quality V3 gears, cylinders, and pistons — but the sheer volume of V2 aftermarket means V2 has more options at every price point. If you want a specific ratio gear set in a specific material from a specific brand, the V2 version exists; the V3 version might not.
AK receiver disassembly
Opening a V3 in an AK body requires removing the dust cover, followed by the stock and possibly the pistol grip depending on the model. It is not harder than V2, just different. The gearbox drops out of the bottom of the receiver on most AK builds.
V6 — the P90 gearbox
The V6 is a horizontal flat-format gearbox engineered specifically for the FN P90 platform. The motor sits horizontally alongside the gearbox rather than below it. This layout is clever for the P90's bullpup design but makes it one of the harder gearboxes to work on — the internals are accessed from the rear and the spring sits at a different angle to every other version.
Aftermarket for V6 is thin. Replacement springs, gears, and pistons exist, but the shell itself is hard to source and expensive when you find it. If you buy a P90 AEG, plan to keep it stock or to treat it as a cosmetic platform. Do not expect to tune it like an M4.
V7 — the M14 gearbox
The V7 fits the M14/M1A platform and is the rarest of the common versions. The gearbox is longer than V2/V3 to accommodate the M14's receiver geometry, with a different cylinder orientation and a flat-plate spring guide. Tokyo Marui's M14 is the reference platform.
Aftermarket is minimal. Spare V7 shells are very hard to find. Tech work on V7 is essentially limited to springs, gears, and hop work — do not count on major upgrades.
QD and split gearboxes — the modern quality-of-life evolution
The problem they solve
The standard V2/V3 workflow for a spring change: clear the gun, open the gearbox, compress and release the spring while holding all other parts in place, extract the spring, fit the new one, reassemble without losing the anti-reversal latch (which every tech has fired across the room at least once). This is a 20–30 minute job for an experienced tech; longer for a beginner.
Quick-spring-change (QSC) systems, sometimes called quick-disconnect (QD) spring systems, let you swap the spring by unscrewing a cap at the buffer tube end or the rear of the gearbox body without opening the shell. The spring pops out. New spring goes in. Reassemble in under two minutes.
Who does this well
Specna Arms EDGE series: the EDGE gearboxes ship with a QSC adapter built in. Bolt-on compatible with V2 receivers, widely available in the UK, and the EDGE gearbox is a genuine step up from budget V2 alternatives in shell quality.
G&G ETU gearboxes: G&G fits their Electronic Trigger Unit system to most of their mid-range AEGs, and several models combine ETU with QSC or a simplified spring-access design. The ETU itself adds programmable burst, active braking, and LiPo cutoff — genuinely useful additions.
ICS Split Gearbox: ICS's approach is different — instead of QSC, they designed a V2/V3-pattern gearbox that splits horizontally into upper and lower halves without requiring full extraction from the receiver. Upper half contains the cylinder, piston, and spring. Lower half contains the gears, motor pinion, and trigger group. For hop and spring work, you only open the half you need. This is the most elegant solution to the "gearbox maintenance is annoying" problem, though it does lock you into ICS-compatible replacement shells.
Proprietary and semi-proprietary systems
Krytac
Krytac built their guns on a reinforced V2-compatible shell — longer, with different screw positions and a thicker casting. First and second-generation Krytac guns used proprietary shells that required Krytac-specific replacements. Later generations moved closer to V2 compatibility. The practical impact: Krytac-pattern gears, cylinders, and pistons from SHS/ZCI/Lonex fit inside a Krytac gearbox, but a standard V2 shell is not a drop-in replacement for the Krytac body.
Tokyo Marui Recoil Shock
Tokyo Marui's Recoil Shock system uses a V2-family gearbox with an added bolt carrier reciprocation mechanism driven off the cycle. Internal parts are a hybrid of standard V2 and proprietary TM-specific components. Standard V2 gears fit; the tappet, spring guide, and several TM-specific parts do not. Factor in a higher parts cost and longer lead times (specialist Japan-import retailers) if you are teching a Recoil Shock.
ARP9 and compact CQB AEGs
The G&G ARP9 is the clearest example of a compact AEG with a purpose-built non-standard shell — short-format, designed around the ARP9 receiver with its own nozzle and cylinder. Some G&G parts cross over; most do not. Similar caveats apply to other compact pistol-calibre carbine AEGs that shoehorn a gearbox into a smaller body than standard.
What actually cross-transfers between versions
This is the practical question for anyone buying parts. Here is the reality:

Which version should a first-time tech open?
The community consensus is V2, and the reason is not that V2 is easiest — it is that the tutorial ecosystem for V2 is the most complete. When something goes wrong (and something will), you are one search away from a YouTube video, a Reddit thread, or a forum post that covers exactly your problem in exactly your gun.
That said, if your first gun happens to be an AK with a V3, do not let "but V2 is for beginners" push you into buying a different gun. V3 has a genuine advantage for first-time techs in one way: the integrated motor cage means you skip the motor shim process entirely, which removes one of the fiddliest steps in a V2 build.
Practical starter recommendation: if you are buying your first teching project specifically to learn, pick up a used V2-based AEG — M4 family — and invest in a gearbox with a QSC system (Specna EDGE or similar). The QSC means your most frequent task (spring swaps for different site limits) stays under five minutes. Work up to a full gearbox rebuild once you know the system.
