Bottom line
Your eye pro is the only piece of kit between a BB and permanent injury. Buy goggles (not glasses) rated ANSI Z87.1+ or EN166 B/F at minimum, ideally MIL-PRF-32432 for high-energy environments. Get an anti-fog coating or a fan. Expect to spend £30–60 — and treat anything cheaper as a temporary rental fix.
Eye injuries from airsoft are rare, devastating when they happen, and almost entirely caused by wearing inadequate or worn-out eye pro.
The standards that actually matter
There are three you'll see, and the difference matters:
ANSI Z87.1+
American National Standards Institute standard for high-velocity impact eye protection. The "+" denotes high-mass / high-velocity impact resistance — that's the one you want for airsoft. Plain Z87.1 (no plus) covers normal industrial debris, not BBs.
Test: a quarter-inch steel ball at 150 FPS without lens penetration or significant deformation.
Most UK sites accept Z87.1+ as the minimum.
EN166
European equivalent. Multiple sub-standards:
- EN166 F — low-energy impact (45 m/s). Equivalent to basic safety glasses. Not enough for airsoft.
- EN166 B — medium-energy impact (120 m/s). Airsoft-suitable.
- EN166 A — high-energy impact (190 m/s). Best in class.
Look for EN166 B or EN166 A stamped on the frame or in the documentation. EN166 F alone is industrial safety glasses; sites will reject them.
MIL-PRF-32432
US military specification. The most demanding eye protection standard in common use. Tested against 5.8mm projectiles at 198 m/s. If your goggles carry MIL-PRF-32432, you're protected against anything an airsoft BB can do, and most of what real fragmentation can do.
ESS, Revision Sawfly, Wiley X, Smith Optics Aegis, Oakley SI all have models rated MIL-PRF-32432.
Goggles vs glasses
Goggles seal around the eye socket with a foam or rubber gasket. No gap for a BB to ricochet into. A BB hitting the lens dissipates against the seal.
Glasses sit on the bridge of your nose. There's a 2–5mm gap above the cheekbone and around the temple. BBs ricochet off cover, terrain, and other players — and they find that gap.
Always wear goggles for outdoor woodland skirmish. Some sites permit glasses for CQB if they meet ANSI Z87.1+, but the smart play is goggles everywhere.
Mesh vs solid lens
Solid (polycarbonate) lenses
The default. A transparent polycarbonate lens, optionally tinted (clear, smoke, amber, photochromic). Excellent protection, good optical clarity, fogs in cold/humid weather without coatings or fans.
Pros: clear vision, full eye sealing, available in prescription inserts, accept tinted lenses for sunny days.
Cons: fogs. Always fogs. The question is just how much.
Mesh goggles
A fine metal or polymer mesh in front of the eyes instead of a solid lens. The mesh stops BBs but lets air through freely.
Pros: never fogs. Period.
Cons: lower visual clarity (you're looking through a grid). Some sites won't accept mesh for under-18s on safety grounds (a shattered BB can fragment through the mesh — extremely rare, but the risk exists). Some sites disallow mesh entirely.
Practical answer: solid lens with anti-fog + fan for most players. Mesh as a backup or for short games where fogging is killing you.
The fogging problem and how to actually solve it
You will spend more time arguing with your goggles fogging than with any other piece of kit. Solutions in order of effectiveness:
1. Built-in fan (best)
A small battery-powered fan inside the goggle frame that moves air across the lens. ESS Profile NVG with Fan, Liquidscope, Lancer Tactical Aero — all options. Lasts a full day on AAA batteries.
This is the real fix. Anti-fog coatings, sprays, and ventilation help; a fan stops fogging entirely.
2. Dual-pane "thermal" lens
A double layer of lens material with an air gap between them. Same principle as double glazing. The inner pane stays at face temperature, the outer pane stays at ambient — no condensation surface. ESS Influx, Revision Locust, Oakley SI all offer thermal lens versions.
Expensive (£70+), durable, no batteries, very effective.
3. Anti-fog coating
A factory-applied surfactant coating that prevents droplet formation. Wears off over months. Don't wipe with a paper towel — that strips the coating. Rinse with water, air-dry, or use a microfibre cloth.
4. Anti-fog spray / wax
Cat Crap, FogTech, ESS Streamer — applied to clean lenses before play. Wears off within a few hours. Useful as a backup.
5. Ventilation
Open the goggle gasket vents (most have them). Helps marginally. Won't save you in cold weather.
Cheap fixes that don't work long-term: liquid soap film, baby shampoo, spit. Buy a fan.
Tinted vs clear lenses
- Clear — your default. Works in all conditions, slight glare on sunny days.
- Smoke / grey — bright sunny outdoor. Reduces glare. Doesn't distort colours much.
- Amber / yellow — overcast UK weather. Boosts contrast against grey skies and low light.
- Photochromic — automatically tints with UV. Expensive but excellent if you only want to buy one lens.
Carry a spare clear lens if you use tinted as default. You will end up in a CQB building with sunglasses on, completely blind, swearing at yourself.
Full-face protection
For CQB and certain MilSim events, your face is in BB-range. Options:
- Lower face mesh (cheap, £8–20) — covers nose and mouth, hangs from goggles or headstrap. Good airflow, basic protection.
- Soft balaclava with mesh mouth — common starter option, comfortable.
- Half mask (Hard ABS) — Dye I4, Push Unite, OneTigris ROC, FMA Wire Mesh. Better protection, less comfortable.
- Full-face mask — Save Phace, Dye I5, paintball-style. Maximum protection, restricts hearing slightly.
Teeth are not covered by goggles. A BB to the face hurts. A BB to a tooth costs £200 at a dentist. Lower face protection is cheap insurance.
Care and lifespan
Polycarbonate lenses degrade. A 5-year-old goggle that's been in your range bag in the boot of a car for two summers may not pass impact rating any more.
- Replace lenses every 2 years with regular use, or sooner if there's any scratching deeper than surface scuff
- Replace the whole goggle if you see cracking in the frame, brittle gasket foam, or loose hinges
- Store in a hard case — not loose in your range bag where your AEG is bouncing into them
What to actually buy
Tiered recommendations:
Starter (under £30): ESS Crossbow basic, Bolle X-1000, Pyramex V2G. Z87.1+ rated, single pane, decent anti-fog coating. Fogs in winter; fine for summer/CQB.
Daily driver (£40–80): ESS Profile NVG with Fan, Revision Sawfly Deluxe, Smith Optics Aegis Echo. Thermal or fan-equipped, MIL-PRF or Z87.1+, comfortable for full-day wear.
End-game (£90+): Oakley SI Ballistic M-Frame Alpha, Revision Bullet Ant, ESS Land Ops. Modular lens systems, multiple tints, ballistic-rated, looks the part for impression players.
